Ozone
Depletion is an issue
that affects each
one of us, no matter where
we live on this planet.
Our well being, that of
our future generations
and of all plant and animal
life on earth is dependent,
to a certain extent, on
conserving the ozone layer
and checking its depletion.
Only then will we be able
to prevent the harmful
UV rays from reaching the
Earth’s surface.
Luckily, there is a plenty
one can do, both to save
the ozone layer and to
protect oneself from harmful
radiations. These simple
steps will go a long way
in ensuring the preservation
of the ozone layer, thereby
affording better protection
for life on Earth.
Steps to Protect the Ozone
Layer
One of the most critical
ways in which you can protect
the ozone layer is to prevent
the emission of ozone–depleting
substances (ODS) such as
CFCs into the atmosphere.
CFCs are responsible for
the breakdown
of ozone molecules and
therefore it is important
to control
the amount of CFCs reaching
the ozone layer. This entails
phasing out the use of
CFCs, to the greatest extent
possible, in our day-to-day
life. Where the use of
CFCs is unavoidable, they
should be utilized in responsible,
safe ways to prevent any
venting into the atmosphere.
You can ensure control
over the amount of CFCs
being released into the
atmosphere by supporting
the use of non-CFC appliances.
Also if you have appliances
with CFCs, ensure that
good and safe practices
are followed during servicing
of these appliances.
