Carbon
tetrachloride (CTC) has proven to cause damage to health
and environment.
Considering its ill effects, International
community has decided to phase out this harmful
solvent.
In this context, GTZ assists industries in identifying
suitable alternatives.

Increase
in industrial production of substance such as solvents
are destabilising the protective blanket of the atmosphere
- the ozone layer. The layer fits snugly round the earth's
surface and filters hazardous UV-B rays from the sun's
radiation.
City-based
garment and refrigerations industries may have to check
their production and consumption level of Carbon Tetra
Chloride (CTC) and mull over alternative methods quickly.
The Environmental Ministry's Ozone Cell has decided
to ban it completely in a phased manner in a bid to
check its harmful effects.
German
Technical Cooperation (GTZ), helps industries to identify
alternatives to carbon tetrachloride. Carbon tetrachloride
(CTC) finds applications across a vast range of industry
segments like the manufacture of capital goods, the
maintenance of equipments, offset printing and the textile
industry etc.

German
Technical Cooperation (GTZ) in a joint effort with Textiles
Committee, Tirupur, would launch a training programme
to find eco-friendly substitute of CTC usage in textile
industry, media release. Every year, Indian textile industry
consumes more than 1500 tons of Carbon Tetrachloride
(CTC) to remove stains from garments, cleaning or degreasing
of metal parts and machinery, servicing garment-making
machinery.

Garment,
textile and fashion website fibre2fashion.com recently
reported that the Textiles Committee of India has conducted
a workshop on the use of ozone-depleting stain removal
substances in the country's textile industry. The workshop
was aimed at introducing alternative chemicals and suggesting
action to help phase out the industry's use of ozone-depleting
substances (ODS).

Awareness
over ozone-depletion is gearing up fast as various nations
are recognizing the importance of environment conservation.
"India
is steadily moving towards phasing out ozone depleting
substances," said Markus Wypior, the program manager
of GTZ, a German development agency, which is supporting
India in controlling the level of substances causing
damage to the ozone layer.

The Textiles
Committee (TC) has joined hands with GTZ-Proklima, the
German technical cooperation agency, to phase-out the
use of ozone depleting substances, namely carbon tetrachloride
(CTC) from the textile and garment sectors. GTZ-Proklima
is already supporting the ozone cell of the ministry
of environment and forest (MoEF) in this endeavour.

Textiles
Committee (TC) and GTZ-Proklima have joined hands to
phase out the use of Carbon Tetra Chloride (CTC) and
find suitable alternatives for CTC as the stain remover.
In this project, GTZ-Proklima would provide information
in form of handouts, testing expenses for conducting
the necessary analysis and effective testing using approximately
20 alternatives, expenses of rental cost for the halls
for the seminar and other miscellaneous expenses.
